Thigh Lift

Normal aging processes or fluctuations in weight can result in loose skin, wrinkles, excess fat deposits or sagging skin that many do not find aesthetically pleasing. If you are displeased with the way your legs look, a thigh lift performed by Dr. Chivers of the Canadian Plastic Surgery Centre may be the solution for you.

Thigh lift surgery is a surgical procedure to reshape the thighs by restoring elasticity, tightening skin and removing creases and wrinkles that are often the result of aging or changes in weight. This surgery contours the legs to help restore their tone and greatly enhances their overall appearance.

Candidates for thigh lift surgery are in overall good health, don’t smoke (or are willing to give up smoking for a prescribed period before and after the procedure), and have a BMI (Body Mass Index) of preferably less than 30.

In general, most candidates for the procedure have one of the following:

  • Poorly toned or wrinkled thighs.
  • Excess adipose tissues that can touch when standing.
  • Thighs that are disproportionately larger than the rest of the leg.

The Procedure

There are different types of thigh lift procedures, each of which provides different benefits to the patient. Before undergoing thigh lift surgery, Dr. Chivers will examine you to determine which surgery and incision placement are the best option for your desired outcomes.

The procedure, which takes on average a few hours, is performed under general anesthesia and involves making an incision either along the inside of the thigh or horizontally near the groin, depending on the type of procedure performed. Dr. Chivers will then excise any excess fat and skin by means of liposuction and surgical excision, respectively.

After your surgery, you will have some swelling and experience mild to moderate pain for approximately one week during which all strenuous activities should be avoided. The swelling will likely last for one month. Once the swelling has subsided, all regular activities can be resumed.

Follow-up instructions at a glance:

  • Dressings are changed the day after surgery and at 1 week.
  • Pain medication and antibiotics are prescribed for the first week following surgery. Any post-operative pain is typically mild to moderate.
  • Patients are able to walk the day after surgery.
  • Drains, if inserted during the procedure, are painlessly removed at 1 week.
  • Incisions are to be kept dry for the first week. Patients can shower after that.
  • Patients are able to return to light duties at work typically after 2 weeks.
  • Ends of dissolving sutures are trimmed at 3 weeks.
  • Garment given to the patient is to be worn for 6 weeks and until the final follow-up.
  • Patients are able to resume full activities and to exercise after 6 weeks.
  • Immersion of incisions in baths, hot tubs, pools, oceans should be avoided for 6 weeks.
